Berthier, Louis-Alexandre
(1753-1815)
   marshal of France
Born in Versailles, Louis-Alexandre Berthier, after an early military career, in 1789 was made major general of the National Guard and was charged with protecting the royal family. Later, as a division commander and chief of staff to the French Army in Italy (1796), he was sent to Rome and, on orders of the Directory (1798), arrested the pope, Pius VI, and brought him to France. Serving as minister of war (1800-1807), Berthier was also made a marshal of France and then major general of the Grande Armée (1805-14). A close adviser and aide to Napoléon Bonaparte (see napoléon i), he was given the principality of Neuchâtel (1806) and later the title prince of Wagram (1809) for his part in the battle of the same name. In 1814, after Bonaparte began to suffer defeat, Berthier rallied to King louis XV III, who named him a peer of France. Taking refuge in Bamberg, Germany, during the hundred days, Berthier was killed in an accident.
